The Alan Turing Institute is the national institute for data science and AI. The institute trains the next generation of leaders, shapes public conversation, and pushes the boundaries of data science and AI for the public good.
The challenge.
Develop a website that reflects the cutting-edge nature of the institute’s work. The institute already boasted strong branding within its comms but the website lagged behind and didn’t work architecturally.

Execute internal and external stakeholder interviews. Conduct site user behaviour, audience, keyword and traffic research. Produce a website strategy that covers site structure, user testing, content, design, SEO, and technology.

Deep insights
The first step was to conduct detailed research and consultation. There are many stakeholders, each with different needs. We needed to hear from them firsthand and hear their pain points and requirements. We also analysed how users interacted with the site through analytics and other tools.Faultless functionality
Visually, the new site design needed to say “bleeding edge”. However, it also had to be practical, housing hundreds of pages of information. Our development team created a highly flexible setup using Drupal 8 that allows content editors great freedom in page layouts. We designed various content types, giving the pages a consistent structure.Ultra-engaging UX
We created a bold website design with contrasting colours and sharp edges, marking a striking geometric design. The site is simple with breathing space, yet utilises complex animation to bring the pages to life. This reflects the institute’s ability to present complex ideas in a simple, easy-to-consume fashion.
