The ESRC Centre for Digital Futures at Work (Digit) offers critical insights into the real-world challenges, opportunities, risks and benefits of the ongoing digital transformation of work. It aims to produce new evidence that can inform policy makers, businesses, trade unions and third sector organisations.

The challenge.

The existing website suffered from an outdated design, a confusing user journey, and poorly organised content, making it difficult for users to navigate or find relevant information. We were tasked with creating a more modern, intuitive solution that improved performance and eased the content management process.

The strategy.

Restructure the site around clearly defined themes and programmes, improve the user journey, and introduce a clean, functional design. On the technical side, deliver dynamic, app-like filtering, migrate the site from Avada to Gutenberg, and ensure top-tier performance across all Core Web Vitals.

What we did.

Reorganised the site

To improve clarity and user flow, we restructured the entire website around core themes and programmes, the client’s key content pillars. This made the site more intuitive and user-friendly, helping visitors to quickly find the specific information they require without having to search extensively for it.

Enhanced design and user experience

We applied a fresh, functional design that prioritised simplicity and clarity. The updated interface enhances navigation, utilising a responsive design that adjusts to all devices and screen sizes with optimal accessibility. The result is a visually stunning site that puts the user first, reducing friction and making key content more prominent.

Implemented app-like browsing

To deliver smoother navigation, we built AJAX-powered filtering that updates content dynamically, without full page reloads. This functionality keeps the experience fast and fluid, and gives the client full control to add or change filters without requiring input from developers.

Migrated content from old to new

We successfully migrated the site from a legacy Avada page builder to WordPress’s native Gutenberg editor. This involved carefully editing and restructuring existing content to fit the new system, ensuring consistency, improving long-term flexibility, and giving Digit’s team a more intuitive experience when editing content going forward.

Optimised for performance (and the environment)

The entire website build was focused on speed and scalability. From streamlining code to reducing unnecessary assets, we ensured the site performed to the highest standard. It now passes all Core Web Vitals with a perfect score of 100, giving users a lightning-fast experience. Through methods like AJAX techniques, optimising images and other media resources, and using several layers of cache we were also able to achieve a Grade A Carbon Rating. This means the website uses minimal energy when delivering content to the user, limiting its negative impact on the environment as much as possible. All this was achieved in a tight timeframe of just 3–4 months.
