The client.
Having launched in 1993, the Good Salon Guide developed into the only independent, nationwide scheme for assessing professional standards within the hairdressing and beauty industries. Members are given access to a database of over 2000 businesses, making Good Salon Guide the place to go for finding high-quality hair and beauty services.
The challenge.
Contra was approached by the Good Salon Guide to help move them forward within the realms of inbound marketing, community development, location-based salon geo-searching, mobile optimisation and all-round great design and user experience. The platform needed to be built in a scalable way that put users first.
The strategy.
Through a range of strategies, Contra was able to develop a site and app that allows users to quickly, efficiently and enjoyably discover salons near them and engage with rich content that helps establish the community. A companion app enables Salons to receive and manage bookings that are triggered from the site.

What we did.
Modern web design
Given the Good Salon Guide’s ambitious growth plans, we decided to build their new website using flexible, scalable architecture that would accommodate improvements later down the line. This ensured the site would continue performing at optimal capacity even as traffic increased. It was also likely that visitors would be accessing the website via mobile and other devices, so we implemented responsive web design elements, ensuring the site would look great and function effectively on smaller screens.Improved booking experience
Previously, customers faced challenges throughout their entire journey, from finding a salon to making a booking. We made it easier for them to find highly-rated salons in their local area by implementing GeoLocation search and streamlined the booking process by cutting query times.Community engagement
As well as interacting via salon reviews and ratings, the website also encourages community engagement through rich content. Establishing a community ensures that the Good Salon Guide has a wealth of returning customers who will use its services time and time again, helping to drive future growth.Enhanced member area
The website needed to be functional for both individual customers and salons. We upgraded the dedicated members’ area with a bespoke companion app. Here, salons can efficiently receive and manage bookings triggered from the site, helping them to stay on top of their demand and provide the best customer experience possible.Project snapshot
