The client.

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) works with businesses, the government, and the research community to deliver quantum computing capabilities for the UK. NQCC adopts a forward-thinking approach, striving to create quantum equipment more powerful than any other supercomputer, with the aim of resolving some of the most complex challenges currently facing society.

The challenge.

As NQCC scaled up and targeted its bright, ambitious vision of the future, their existing website was left behind. It was no longer a true representation of their business. It required a design that better reflects their goals and how they’re achieving them. Users need to understand the several areas of NQCC’s work and how, together, they will make a positive contribution to our lives.

The strategy.

Design a user-friendly website with a sleek, modern look that prioritises ease of navigation. Develop new information architecture and site structure, tailored around user needs, ensuring content is easily accessible. Optimise for search engines (SEO) to reach a broader audience and drive awareness of quantum technology.

What we did.

User personas

Quantum computing has the potential to improve lives across all areas of society, meaning people working in a broad variety of industries might have reason to engage with NQCC. We conducted in-depth market research and took insight from existing customers to create several personas that helped better understand NQCC’s target audience. This way, each prospective customer could be taken on a bespoke journey and gain access to the areas of the business that help resolve their unique challenges.

Innovative, dynamic and ground-breaking design

As a flagship programme of UK Research and Innovation, the look and feel of the new website needed to be in line with its branding, while reflecting the work that NQCC is doing. A technology-inspired colour palette creates a futuristic feel that reflects NQCC’s aim to achieve something beyond the realm of what is available today. Microinteractions (dynamic moving parts) engage users, create visual interest and further build on the modern design.

Industry-leading performance

NQCC could not drive its vision of building and harnessing the most powerful computers in the world if its website performed sub-optimally. We made several performance-focused design and development decisions, including optimising images, mobile optimisation, and HTML/CSS. This resulted in an easy-to-use, high-performing website capable of comfortably handling an influx of traffic.

Unrivalled user experience

To ensure a seamless user experience, the layout was organised and structured around user needs. This enables every visitor to easily navigate the website and acquire the information they’re looking for. With quantum computing in its infancy, both stakeholders and the public aim to learn more about the technology, how it’s progressing and the work that NQCC are doing. Blogs, news articles and other insights are all categorised using taxonomies, directing user to similar content they might find useful.

Optimised for SEO

An SEO strategy was implemented to help reach a wider audience and increase awareness of quantum computing. This involved extensive keyword research to identify popular search queries. Headers and body copy were optimised using key search terms across all pages on the site, as well as featuring in meta titles and descriptions to improve NQCC’s overall visibility on search engines.
