BBC: Jack Garratt

The BBC has a large need for fresh online content for use on social and on their websites. BBC Introducing asked Contra to create a short animation that charted the rise of Jack Garratt, who was top of the BBC’s ‘Sound of 2016’ poll.

The Contra Film Team scripted the animation, working closely alongside the BBC team, to pick out the highlights of Jack’s meteoric rise.The design needed to have an original and fresh look (like Jack himself) so in addition to animation, snippets of live action video to really bring those key moments to life. Sound design was also vital: the team used various sounds relating to music production and performance such as record scratching, guitar feedback and crowd cheering to immerse the viewer in Jack’s world. BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephen’s voiceover provided the final element of polish.

The film was hugely successful online with praise from fans and the BBC team.

The animation has provided BBC Introducing with something uniquely innovative and stylish, helping to tell the story of one of our artists in an eye catching and original way. It’s popularity online has been matched internally, receiving praise from all corners of the BBC, including the Director General himself.
