Square Enix, one of Contra’s existing clients, asked Contra to assist with promoting their latest Final Fantasy game; Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call. Square Enix’s main objective was to create a quiz for the game’s main site. In addition, there was a requirement to embed the quiz across a selection of gaming sites. This meant sharing the quiz across several touch points over the web – the intention being to extend the game’s exposure and go viral.
Contra were commissioned to design and build the quiz. Contra chose Ruby on Rails as the framework for the build, as well as Knockout, to ensure a wonderful, rich experience for the gamer. Contra’s design was in line with the game’s branding, to reflect the look and feel of the latest Final Fantasy inspired game.
The quiz allowed gamers to test their knowledge on the Final Fantasy series of games, by having to correctly identify a specific game, based on a music track played to them. The quiz selected 10 random songs in total, taken from the 150 song tracks played throughout the series.
The quiz was released in six different languages, conforming with Square Enix’s standard procedure for releasing games.
The game was also connected to Facebook, so players could compete with friends and showcase their top scores.
The popularity of the Final Fantasy games meant the quiz thoroughly engaged with the Square Enix audiences. The fantastic user experience enabled gamers to test their knowledge, bringing the whole series of games together. The quiz successfully caught the attention of many Final Fantasy fans and was an effective promotional tool for the latest game in the series.
