St Martin-in-the-Fields is an inclusive church in the centre of London providing a variety of support, education and entertainment to its community. St Martin-in-the-Fields have been running a successful Christmas appeal – working in partnership with the BBC – since 1927. The church formed a charitable organisation surrounding their work to support the high demand of generosity in helping to transform the lives of homeless and vulnerable people.

The online campaign wasn’t coping with the increased success of the appeal. The digital campaign needed a more robust online solution since the website was not able to handle the amount of online donations during the appeal.  In addition, the digital campaign needed a smarter look and new video assets.

The solution was to create a sub-site for the charity that ensured a smooth and easy donation process. Contra created a sleek modern design that guides donors straight to the donations page. The streamlined design also has strong ‘calls to action’ for users to get involve and share the campaign. The site was created using Responsive Web Design and so works across all devices. The site features Contra’s ‘What matters to you at Christmas?’ film, which highlights precisely why donations are so important.

Contra delivered outstanding high-performance hosting for the site. Before release, the new site was ‘load tested’ to ensure it could cope with the huge spike in traffic sparked by the Radio 4 appeal. This gave the client great confidence and peace-of-mind because  it proved that the site would remain operational when the appeal hit.

St-Martin-in-the-Fields were delighted with the digital campaign assets. The films and new site made a huge difference to the donations processed.

"The BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martin-in-the-Fields is the most important fundraising event in our calendar and our partnership with the BBC brings a huge level of exposure each year. Our website was not coping with the very high levels of traffic, even crashing during the Appeal. On top of that the site was not engaging our donors fully. We needed a more robust solution that could cope with whatever was thrown at it and we needed a way of increasing conversions; turning one off donors into regular ones.

It has never crashed and never slowed down, even at the peak of the Appeal."
