The Institute is a relatively new organisation with an exciting mission in an emerging field. It wanted to reflect the cutting edge nature of its work in all of its communications. Branding agency Red & White Studios produced excellent branding, which did present the Institute as modern and forward thinking organisation. The website however lagged behind the rest of the comms. It didn’t reflect an organisation at the bleeding edge and didn’t work architecturally.
The first step was to conduct detailed research and consultation. There are many stakeholders, each of whom has quite different needs. We needed to hear from them firsthand and hear their pain points and requirements. We also as analysed how users interacted with the site through analytics and other tools. All this enabled us to produce a strategy for the site that covered structure, content, design, SEO and technology.
Visually, the new site design needed to say “bleeding edge” but it also had to be very practical and house hundreds of pages of information. There is a lot going on at the Institute and we needed to come up with a structure that allowed all this activity to be communicated.
Contra UX designers had a lot of fun using the excellent branding to produce a beautiful design that has a real visual impact while presenting information in an easy to consume way. Animation, cross promotion and on page navigation all help to provide a rich user experience. Our development team created a highly flexible setup using Drupal 8 that allows content editors great freedom in page layouts. At the same time the content types we designed mean pages have a consistent structure, which is important when there are many editors.
The site has been extremely well received by the Institute and its stakeholders. It has also received some industry recognition.
